On May 16, 2008, the Confucius Institute Headquarters and V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University signed an agreement on creating a Confucius Institute. On December 16, 2008, the Confucius Institute was officially opened. In April 2009 the Confucius Institute began its work. Its founder from the Chinese part was Anhui University.
The mission of the Confucius Institute is to promote understanding of China and its culture in the world, develop friendly relations between China and other countries, Ukraine in particular. Education at Confucius Institutes will be focused on the peculiarities of cooperation with China. Besides the tasks of the Institutes are:
- to organize courses for the Chinese language and Chinese culture;
- to hold scientific conferences devoted to China;
- to popularize the Chinese language and Chinese culture through various contests and events;
- to carry out qualification tests in the Chinese language (HSK);
- to prepare and publish educational literature on the Chinese language;
- students’ and academics’ in-depth training in China, consultations on studying in China.
